This cake had a Poppy theme all over. The flavour inside was Lemon and Poppy Seed, and it was decorated with hand painted Poppies on the outside, with a Sugar Poppy on top and delivered to Weybridge in Surrey for a very special birthday.
I was asked to create a Poppy theme cake for grandma. Her birthday was in November and what a fitting flower for that month? I was given all kinds of inspiration from painted Poppy themed cakes, to cakes with sugar flowers on top, so why not create an elegant combination of them all.
It was unusual for me to cover a birthday cake in fondant. However, it was essential for the Handpainted design on the outside. I used Edible Oil Paints by Karen Portaleo for the painted design as the colours are strong and vibrant, but don’t dry too quickly and can be used to create a fluid movement on the design.
The poppy on the top was another rarity for me. I usually say that I don’t make sugar flowers, but a striking poppy is hard to say no to. I used Squires Flower Paste, in a pre-mixed Pointsettia colour, with added dusting from Sugarflair Poppy Red Blossom Tint to give a deep red colour.
Now, onto the insides – delicious Lemon and Poppy Seed Cake. I used my classic Lemon Drizzle Cake with added poppy seeds that I soaked in lemon juice to soften them up. The off cut of cake I tried was utterly delicious. Teamed with Lemon Buttercream and Lemon Curd for the full Lemony experience.
The Lemon and Poppy seed Cake made it’s way to an address in Surrey for a special party, where it was enjoyed by all generations from young to old.
